However, the economics of streaming is proving to be very different from Linear TV, which historically provided massive profits. Most Streaming services are currently losing money, spending large amounts on new content, hoping to grow future subscribers and create pricing power. But when growth slows or markets shift focus to immediate profits, this can lead to disastrous consequences for streaming stocks. A clear example of this is Netflix’s recent 70% crash, following their first quarter of subscriber decline in over a decade. Like other growth stocks, all streaming companies have seen a rerating of multiples this year, plummeting their stock prices.
