Mixing data and reports, meaning building consolidation reports by linking to other reports is an all to common error when building out complex spreadsheets. If you organise your data so that you have dedicated areas that only hold data, and this data is in a tabular format with the identifying column being the first column, then it is easy to vlookups for your Excel reporting application. It will also be very easy to manage your excel reporting system going forward. This means that using vlookups can force you to build out spreadsheet systems that are very easy to mantain and be scalable. Vlookup looks up the first column of a data range until it finds a match for the criteria item that was input as the first argument to the vlookup function, when it finds a match it then returns the value that is in the same or more likely a different column that is x columns away from the first column. The value for x being the column offset that you specify as the third argument to the vlookup function.
