Arizona’s Senate voted to repeal an 1864 abortion ban, which outlawed abortion from the moment of conception, with no exceptions for rape or incest. Without repeal, the ban could have taken effect just weeks after being revived by the state Supreme Court last month.

‘I am deeply grateful that the bill I introduced to repeal the 1864 ban has made it to the finish line,’ said AZ state Rep. Stephanie Stahl-Hamilton.
Despite the repeal, there are still restrictions on abortion in Arizona. In 2022, the state passed a law that bans abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy.

Arizona Democrats said they’re pushing for measures to be put on the ballot this November that would restore protections for reproductive rights via a popular vote from the electorate.

‘We are taking our anger and frustration straight to the ballot box this November and voting for reproductive freedom for all, and first and foremost, that includes flipping the Arizona House and flipping the Arizona Senate so we can protect abortion rights in the future,’ said Athena Salman, an abortion-rights advocate.
