There is often times far more content than what is possible to include on an episode and usually this stuff just ends up sitting on a hard drive not getting used. While we were at Ketu Bay I filmed myself making scones and we ended up having so much good footage with the fishing and upcoming smoking the fish episode that this scone footage didnt make the cut so I have uploaded it to my Instagram account and collabed it with Rhonda's food instagram account "Love Grub Galley"

You can check out this mini episode on instagram at https://www.instagram.com/reel/C54ItHiAmle/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

A heartbreaking video of two members of the Ocean Cruising Club whose boat sunk 300NM from the Marquesas a few days ago. They were rescued by another OCC boat they were buddy boating with.

It doesn't matter if your boat is 60 years old or factory new, things can fail at sea. The power and abuse of the ocean finds weakness and things break. You can read about it here: https://www.oceancruisingclub.org/home/news/ItemID=2249

I will be doing a Zoom Workshop on Anchoring on Feb 3rd (USA)... Here are all the details...

HAPPY HOOKER; A ZOOM WORKSHOP ON ANCHORING WITH SAILOR JAMES

February 3rd (USA) Time TBD (likely 5PM – EST) Est. Runtime 1.5 hours - $35 USD (Includes Class, PDF & Archived Video link) Limited to 100 Tickets : https://svtriteia.bigcartel.com/product/anchoring-zoom-workshop-with-sailor-james?_gl=1*bp1hmd*_gcl_au*MTI5ODQ3MTkxOS4xNzA2MjQ3Nzg4*_ga*MzkyODY3NjkuMTcwNjI0Nzc4OA..*_ga_QZ4HDFTSEZ*MTcwNjI5MTUwNy4yLjEuMTcwNjI5NjE4NC40My4wLjE4ODM2MzcwMTE .

During this Zoom Workshop James will explain the basics of anchoring covering scope, ground tackle, reading the landscape, what to do during a storm and more. This will be a live Zoom class with power point slides with brief Q&A during the class and an open floor discussion at the end of the workshop.

James Frederick has more than 15k nautical miles of passage making behind him and has anchored in more than 130 anchorages around the world. From Shore tying in the Marlborough Sounds to bows to the rocks in the Γ…land islands of Finland. Floating his chain over coral bommies in the Tuamotus to anchoring bow stern in Southern California more times than he can count. He has anchored with 2ft of water under my keel in a river in Opua, NZ and dropped the hook in 70ft at Catalina Island near Los Angeles, from fair weather to cyclones.

This workshop will have something to learn for most mariners and will be especially useful for new sailors or sailors who have not yet ventured outside of their local cruising grounds but plan to sail off into the sunset.

1. Understanding Scope
2. Best Ground Tackle for Your Boat
3. Picking a Spot & Anchor Watch
4. Dragging anchor; How to Handle It
5. Overview on Specialty anchoring; Bow Stern / Floating Chain / Shore tying
6. General Discussion

If the class is a success I will hold these workshops about once a month covering subjects such as How to Go Cruising, Route Planning and Foreign Ports, Specialty Anchoring, Passage Making and more.

My latest article for Yachting World magazine is the cover story for the January 2024 issue. The article it’s about going solo, the ups and downs, challenges, and triumphs. I reached out to some of my friends who are also solo sailors or have spent time sailing alone to get their thoughts on the subject. Thanks to Holly Martin @WindHippieSailing , Sam Holmes @samholmessailing , Kiana Weltzien and David Haigh for answering my questions and talking about your experiences.

Yachting World's Editor, Helen Fretter reached out to me with the idea for this story. It was outside of my experience zone as a writer to try and write an article that combined not only my voice but the stories of a handful of other sailors (NOTE: Trying to get responses from four other sailors in a timely manner is like herding cats). Helen was very patient with me and steered me through the process after the first big edit, A testament to her skills as an editor. Thank You Helen πŸ™πŸ»

Yachting World has been around since 1894. Anyone who knows me knows that history is deeply important to me. I am honored to now have a cover story in a publication with such a long and rich history. In the digital age the printed word only still exists because there are those of us who love holding magazines and books in our hands.

For me, my heroes have long been writers; AnaΓ―s Nin, Jack London, The Beats, Hal Roth, Miles Smeeton, Lin Pardey, John Kretschmer. To tell a story in a way that causes the reader to have an emotional reaction, to make their heart race, to make them laugh and to give them great anxiety. This to me is the magic of storytelling.

Those in the UK can pick up the printed edition of the magazine now and anyone who doesn’t want to wait until it reaches your local area and buy the digital copy via the Yachting World website (AND THEN ALSO buy the print copy when it reaches your local area πŸ˜‰)

Thanks again to @WindHippieSailing , @samholmessailing , Kiana and David for contributing to this story.
