Well, it's been a long ride, this whole adventure map thing...

A much longer story than we ever anticipated...

and its not quite done yet but were getting very close... I will say though... Watching it all change so much over such a long period of time has really taught me a lot...

From the original ideas scribbled down in the back of an old notebook to now.. you wouldn't even recognize it.

So today I'm very happy to be able to finally share the full story with everyone. So that you can see everything that happened. And see how much it changed from the very beginning.

THE END IS IN SIGHT. The map is almost complete. Details below:

In the end there are over 40 locations... it has taken us well over 1000 hours between the two of us, more than a year of planning off and on and more than 3 months of building and rnd....

THIS WEEKEND MARCH 10TH AT 11AM EASTERN, the video telling the full story of making the map is coming out:
So much has happened in all of that time that we put in(mentioned above). I wanted to talk about it in these update posts but there just isn't enough room. So I made a full story video coming out on my YouTube channel on Sunday.

RECENT UPDATES on the map:
-First of all: All locations in the game are complete except the boss arenas! Which means quests/story, balanced loot and all types of enemies were added to over 40 locations in the last few weeks!
-Big changes to the first road dude to some feedback we got. (the Eikthyr road) Basically making sure that intro game mechanics are taught to the new players including:
-Duelist lore updated and location pathing updated
-Enchanter lore updated and pathing updated
-Cabin in the Woods lore updated and whole new location added
     -Spawn point villages updated
-New elder/runestone added with boss info pre first boss fight
-Some new connections made between locations(secret)
-Some abilities added for players at certain locations
-black forest spawner location added
-3 more spawn point set villages added
-6 boss loot rooms, boss loot and connections added
-5 completely new plains locations added to the final road leading to mistlands town and final questline
-invisible walls added to block access to certain places
-hole in roof fixed in adventurers guild in meadows town lol
-Hildir and Haldor merchants disabled to avoid confusion in place where they were used for decoration
-added helpful signs in meadows town for intro to game
-added asmongold tribute sign in meadows town
-added prequel puzzle series winners and honorable mentions to runestone in portal hub in meadows town
-added armor sets in each town to bring parties up to certain level of armor periodically
-in general added more loot throughout the world- mostly in the form of food and arrows
-further cleaned up areas around cities for performance (removed zone spawners, pickables, etc)
-A LOT of other miscellaneous improvements along the way

WHAT IS LEFT?
Well at this point we are finishing up the boss lairs and then we have to go through every single location and test everything to make sure that it all works properly. **After testing the map will be done and released shortly after.**

I included some of my favorite of the pictures from the recent Reddit post I did on the project. I'll include the link here if you haven't checked it out.

This Valheim Adventure map has taken a lot more time than we ever expected... Here's another update:

Last Live stream before map:
-First of all we have a livestream coming up this weekend with our final updates on the production of the map. We would love to see you there. It'll be @Dhakhar and myself again of course and it will once again be on my channel. Not sure on time yet though. Most likely Saturday evening Eastern time. (March 2nd)

Last Video before map:
-I also have a video coming next weekend on the FULL story of the Adventure Map production. It is probably my best video yet. Hope to see you there also. (March 10th)

The map itself:
-We are working hard to do this right so its taken a little bit more time than we expected but it should be out in a few more weeks.
-We have made some recent discoveries that take time to implement into the rest of the map so we have been working on that and rest of the major updates/small updates, and some completely new additions/locations since the last alpha release.
-We are currently in the end stages where we should be completing most(if not all) locations by mid next week and then we can work on the bosses which are the last thing on our to do list.

Cant wait to release it soon. Sorry for the delays. If you get a chance to check out my video on the full story on March 10th you will see how much we truly underestimated how much time it would take to pull this whole thing off. πŸ˜…

BIG Adventure map update:

The map is really coming together quickly now. We are almost ready to add the final bits that we saved for last that I'll talk about in just a moment.

Context:
Recently, we've been working on a lot of different things so a bit of context is needed. We have 6 sections of roads that we call the "boss name" loops. So for ex the first ~10 locations are referred to as the Eikthyr loop. Each loop has unique locations and a unique story that ties everything together to eventually bring you to an amped up boss fight.

Additionally, there is the main story/side quests. If you participated in the Odin's Insight puzzle series then you already know a bit about this. I recommend checking out that channel in the Discord if you haven't already but here are the two most relevant points:
β€’ Throughout the world you will be visiting Adventurers Guilds which are a shadow of their former selves. You(and your party) are the new adventurers taking a shot at battling your way through the bosses to please Odin.
β€’ The elders are the npc's placed in the world that will help guide you on your journey. They are a bit of a mystery but are thought to be old adventurers that gave up on trying to defeat the bosses and earn their way back into Valhalla and instead are living out their lives in Valheim.

So how far have we made it? Currently we have fully completed the Eikthyr, Elder and Bonemass loops with with stories on the other three loops already decided as well. Here is a list of things that we have been doing to complete these "loops":

3 main things which were all saved for AFTER the main building stages in alpha version 1 and 1.1:
1. Enemies: Enemies make things complicated. The second you start spawning them in you have to worry about being in ghost mode(turning on and off constantly), mods functioning differently in multiplayer than in single player, accidently triggering traps after setting them up, aggro-ing enemies and much more. This is why we do these last in each location. So far we have come up with, traps, ambushes, regular enemies, uses for spawners, custom enemies/bosses.
2. Quest lines: quest lines are tricky. Personally I love storytelling so this has been a lot of fun creating throughout the project. With that being said, it is still very time consuming. We are making a big effort to make sure each loop has its own unique storyline and that the overarching story and lore is something that can be followed and understood all the way to a final climax at the end of the story.
3. Loot: The loot is something that we definitely never thought about in the old days of planning this for fun. In the end,
"we had to go through every single "loot" item in Valheim (armor, weapons, shields, bows, arrows, bolts, staffs, meads, bombs, foods) and place them throughout the playthrough to "earn" as you complete locations. So no need for farming, mining, etc. You just need to play and follow the story and all of the loot is provided as you progress through all POI's, towns, bosses etc. Some loot comes crafted and some comes as just ingredients. All loot is in order from meadows progression at first to mistlands progression at the very end and is provided in a way that you are able to fight the current enemies you are facing in the story for whatever size party you are playing with."
-quote from Discord from me

TLDR: we are completing each loop with these 3 things in mind. Filling out properly balanced loot, stitching together story lines, and when that is all done adding the enemies.

Other progress:
The roads:
1. I have smoothed out all of the roads, replaced lamposts at new ground height and applied new infinite health/no creator, applied biome specific textures on the roads, and added extra features like lookouts/places to sit/bridges/etc.
2. Also the biggest thing is removing/changing all pickables/loot along the roads. Every single bit of loot you need should be provided throughout the playthrough. This is a fully curated experience. So all of these pickables will just confuse/distract from the loot that is intended for the player. Not to mention deleting this many things throughout the world isn't bad for performance either.
Adding extra locations: We've also added another 5-10 locations never before seen to fill gaps in the roads and provide a more action packed journey.
Boss Loot rooms: The boss loot rooms are almost done. If you've seen the boss arenas in my video then you know what to expect. (very small sneak peak at one in the pictures)

Still have to do/what we saved for last:
-still have to do: three loops Moder, Yagluth, Queen (enemies/quest lines/loot)(already in progress)
-final testing phase
-saved for last: Boss fights. Now that we have figured out what we can do with enemies it will soon be time to finish the world with the amped up raid like boss fights. With how important they are to Valheim and how important they are to closing each story loop we will be trying very hard to do them right. We want to get the balancing right for each fight, with a wide variety of enemies, to make it a truly one of a kind Valheim experience.
