We are a group of researchers from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resource, US Geological Survey, Bemidji State University, and Augsburg University. We study amphipods (also called "freshwater shrimp") in the prairie pothole region of Minnesota, USA. Amphipods are important food resource for larger wildlife, especially in wetlands where they occur in high numbers - thousands per cubic meter of water! However, amphipod populations have declined in prairie wetlands, many of which have been lost or altered by drainage, sedimentation, and fish invasions. Amphipod decline has been linked to decline in Lesser Scaup ("bluebills"), which specialize on amphipods as a food resource. Our goal is to learn more about amphipod habitat needs and reintroduction techniques, so we can restore amphipods and wildlife habitat! Funding for our project is provided by the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund as recommended by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources.
