At 2023-11-22 -  19:53:35  (UTC) our DNS host (Cloudflare) was accessed by an unknown attacker who set up a redirection rule that forwarded any Windows users who visited our domain www.longplays.org to a website with a potential malware download.

This was identified, resolved and secured within 30 minutes.
If you did visit the site during those 30 minutes (and the site did not load as expected and redirected you) it might be advisable to run a virus scan on your machine just to be sure!

Some of our fans may have noticed that we are reuploading some of our older longplays. This is mainly due to the original longplay having a very bad bitrate on Youtube due to it being uploaded at the original resolution of the game. The current project is to reupload a lot of our older longplays upscaled to a higher resolution so they can take full advantage of higher bitrate that Youtube has for higher resolution videos. We will still be uploading a minimum of 2 new longplays a day as we have done for quite a while now as well as this upscale project.

We could have ended up like that - so always try to have tight security with your channel or you might end up like that too! If you see something like this, report it to YouTube immedately! 

Here is a more detailed explanation of what happend:

Last Saturday a hacker tried to get access to our YT account. It seems many other Youtubers were also hit, but I managed to prevent it. Others were not so lucky and their channels started to stream the fake Elon Musk / Tesla video and it seems to be a crypto scam that has been going on for over a year. 

So when I noticed the email security alert I saw someone had changed the Google account email address and tried adding a recovery phone. So the first thing I did was check my PC for malware and it found something suspicious. After it was removed, I rebooted the PC and changed the passwords to all email providers and our email-server. Then I logged into the Google account and removed all the hackers stuff and changed the pass. The channel was safe - I filed a report to YT´s Security team.

Unfortunately when I tried to change back the Google Account email address to what it was previously - longplays@longplays.eu - it didnt give me the option to do so. As it turns out, if your channel does not have a Gmail address, it can be changed easily, and changing it doesn't even require any 2FA confirmation. However, once your address is changed to a Gmail address, the option to change the account email disappears. So I told our MCN that they should tell YT, that this was the last remaining issue we had left to solve.

Two days after I had filed the security report It still said "in Progress", so I asked our MCN if they know what´s going on. I got told that they are waiting for feedback from me and I said they never sent me anything. This was confusing, but as it turns out, YT´s security team had emailed their findings and infos to the email address that was attached with the Google Account.... the hacker´s email-account! Good job!

After that was cleared up thanks to our MCN, the only thing left was the removal of the hackers email-address. However, once your Google account was changed to a Gmail address - it can never be changed again EVER - the hacker´s email address was permanently stuck to the account like people are in Ohio! Awesome security design there Google, making it even easier for hackers!

So after 2 days of YT trying to fix this, they said it was impossible and the only solution was to move the YT channel to a different Gmail-account. That´s what happend then and they moved it to my other Gmail account. That move was the cause for the "BrandAccount" name. But it wasnt possible to change it to "World of Longplays" as the "old" account was  blocking that name. They did manage to fix that and we finally had the original name back!

What an odyssey this was - Google should really review their security design, as it isnt very good!
That said, at least 2FA and the 48h they give you to undo changes prevented damage!

World of Longplays 

Some of you may have noticed that our account was changed to "Brand Account". This was the result of us dealing with the result of an hacking attempt recently. We were able to prevent the hack - a more detailed report will be posted soon!
