We did the world’s first ever 5-camera podcast on an LED Volume Video Wall 🚀

The Volume at Stray Vista is the same technology that they filmed The Mandalorian on. It uses Unreal Engine 5 to render entire worlds and then maps your position in front of them to make it seem photorealistic. It’s the largest virtual production studio in Texas.

Usually this technology is used for movies. They shoot one scene at a time with a single camera, actors, pre-decided scripts with dialogue, and the ability to cut and reset. The foreground lighting and camera positions are dialled in advance to make the subjects seem immersed in the colours of the landscape on the screen to give it realism.

We attempted this with 5 cameras, live. Never done before.

We used 10 different scenes across 4 episodes which actually switched live DURING the episode itself when the conversation changed from one topic to another. Which also meant we had to light every scene separately in advance, save those presets and then coordinate the foreground lighting to change at the exact same time as the background switched.

I can’t explain how hard this is to try and accomplish. It’s not surprising to me that this hasn’t been done before because it’s so insanely complex. It’s halfway between a live video DJ performance, a video game, cinema, and a conversation, all coordinated in real time.

We had custom scenes built by the amazing team at Stray Vista to match the guests and topics I wanted to talk about. The scenes have splashing water, flying birds, driving trucks, cars on fire, kayaking killers and even a scene where me and Tim Ferrriss are floating in space with the earth and moon orbiting around us. There’s so much more going on in the background. It’s nothing short of spectacular.

On the guest front, the conversations are phenomenal. I recorded with superstars - Dr Peter Attia, Tim Ferriss, Dr K HealthyGamer and MrBallen. More than 12 hours of content across 3 days.

First clip from Dr K just went live right now. Full episode live Monday. We’re dropping one episode a week for the next month.

2 million subscribers!! 🚀

It took us 5 years, 600 episodes and 1000 videos to hit 1 million.

It’s taken 9 months and 120 episodes to hit 2 million.

We gained more subscribers in the last month than the entire first 3 years of the show. Absolutely wild.

Modern Wisdom was something I started as a side project on my couch in Newcastle Upon Tyne. I was trying to create my own syllabus for understanding myself and the world around me because I was lost. I didn’t know why I behaved the way I did. I didn’t understand why my thinking got hijacked and I couldn’t connect with other people fully. And I figured that if I launched my own show I’d have an excuse to ask questions of people who might have some answers for me.

Roll forward 6 years and last week I recorded a world-first (more info coming next week) with the most complexity of any podcast production in history using a 10-person film crew to capture some of the biggest guests in the world, in a country on the other side of the planet. Life is crazy.

Whoever the programmer is for this version of the simulation we’re living in, I very much appreciate you allowing “talk to people on the internet” to be a profession.

I’m going through an odd period of change right now. I can’t pretend like the huge increase in attention is all good. Champagne problems I know. But that’s how I feel. Dealing with so much more vigilance and scrutiny and ambient awareness that people have critical things to say about you is weird to deal with. Especially if you’re quite a private person. There’s no media training course for this. No one bestows on you the capacity to cope with comments from half a billion viewers a year just because you’ve been doing it for a while.

You see yourself the same and the world increasingly sees you as something different. And because we all forget the compliments but remember the insults, any increase in platform size doesn’t feel like an increase in support, it mostly just feels like an increase in criticism.

That being said, if taking shit from people on the internet is the price of doing business at this level, then I’ll eat that all day long. I’m not stopping. I’m gonna continue to follow my instincts and talk to people I’m interested in regardless of notoriety or popularity. Good ideas are interesting and open conversations are like spirulina for the soul in a media landscape filled with fast food for your amygdala.

Thank you so much to everyone who’s supported me and the show, I really appreciate you all. The shares, the likes, the kind messages and comments. You’re all jacked, smart, curious, unreasonably reasonable legends and I love you.

Thank you,
Chris x

Happy birthday to me 🥳

Another year older, another year only negligibly wiser.

It's been a wild change the last 12 months, a big upheaval in attention and scrutiny and notoriety.

Obviously it's very flattering and exciting, having success is cool AF, but it's also scary and disconcerting.

I honestly appreciate every single one of you who supports me and the show, you guys act like a reassuring anchor when everything is getting hectic and crazy. Thank you.

If you would like to give me a today present - just make sure you’ve hit Subscribe and share your favourite episode with some friends.

(more than 50% of people find podcasts by personal recommendation so the value of this is literally the best thing you could do and I will love you long time)

I appreciate you very much. Thank you from Miami!

Whatever version of the simulation we’re living in where I get to speak to the most interesting people in the world and call it a job - I’m very grateful to the programmer. ⁣
