Thanks everyone!
Having lots of people watch the videos is very encouraging. I have many more projects I want to do so keep your eyes peeled for those!

There hasn’t been a video for a little while, I’ve been very busy at work and doing some things that I haven’t been filming. Such as getting started into scraping. When I start scraping more involved projects I’ll be sure to film the process.
If you’d like to see more frequent updates on what I’m doing in the shop feel free to follow me on instagram @ed_and_t

The 4-jaw chuck backplate saga continues.

The new material arrived and I’ve been continuing the build from where I left off.

I decided to grind the L00 taper and it came out better than I expected. Second picture shows the contact with the spindle taper with Prussian blue.

The threads also came out a lot nicer than last time.

New addition to the shop!

Today I traded my Wohlhaupter UPA 3 boring/facing head (2nd pic) for a larger model UPA 4 (1st pic)

These boring heads are some of the most well crafted mechanical devices I’ve ever seen. Virtually all parts are hardened steel and are precision ground on all surfaces, even unnecessary ones.

The UPA 4 has an interchangeable shank which is the reason I made this trade.

The MT3 shank on the UPA 3 is integral and required an adapter to my ISO30 mill spindle. This resulted in a long projection and it was not possible to use the head without chatter.

For the new UPA 4 I can make my own adapter and bolt it on without having to mess with the head itself.

The UPA 4 is much heavier than the UPA 3 which will hopefully help with stability.

Despite the failed project this weekend I managed to turn the scrapped material into another tool and squeeze it into an video.

From wrecked back-plate to ball drilling fixture to weld custom nuts into stainless balls.

Check it out! https://youtu.be/Gyx1v7M7aYE

No new video this weekend unfortunately, it was going to be a backplate for a new 4-jaw chuck I got for the lathe. I messed up the threading while measuring the pitch diameter with pins and forgot that the compound doesn’t read in diameter. Thread is now undersized and the part scrapped. I’ll have to wait a bit for new material. I’ll take the opportunity to make a better threading tool in the meantime, I was using a TNMG insert which is more of a bulldozer than a fine threading tool I came to discover.
