France estimates that 150,000 Russian soldiers have been killed during Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne said in an interview published on Friday.
Speaking to Russian independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta Europe, Sejourne said Paris estimated total Russian casualties, at 500,000 in the war, now in its third year. "All of this for what?" Sejourne asked. "This can be summed up in two words: for nothing," he said.

China has allocated more than $1 trillion in pledged funding to emerging nations via its BRI, a programme designed to bolster trade relationships between China and various nations in Asia, Africa and Europe. Western critics have, however, consistently cautioned that the BRI utilises a strategy known as debt-trap diplomacy, where a country leverages loans to increase its influence over another.

Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson was turned away from a polling station while trying to vote on May 2, having not brought appropriate identification.
He cast his ballot in South Oxfordshire, where voters are choosing a police and crime commissioner.
The misstep was embarrassing for Johnson because the requirement to bring photo ID is a stipulation of the Elections Act he introduced in 2022 while in Downing Street.
The change was rolled out last year, with local elections in May 2023 the first time voters needed to show ID.
There are 22 acceptable forms of ID, including passports, driving licences, older or Disabled Person's bus passes and Oyster 60+ cards.

Archaeologists have unearthed the skeletons of five people, missing their hands and feet, at a former Nazi military base in Poland.

They were discovered at a Nazi command centre known as the Wolf’s Lair in Gierloz, northeastern Poland, after the group unearthed a fragment of a human skull during a dig on February 24 and alerted local authorities, who decided to carry out further excavations.

The remains belonged to three adults, a teenager and a newborn baby, according to a statement from the Latebra Foundation, a historical organization based in the Polish city of Gdansk.

Former Israeli military attaché to Russia Efraim Michaeli has likened Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, claiming that Kyiv is effectively promoting a never-ending military conflict with Moscow. The retired colonel also said Ukraine could have avoided the confrontation by renouncing its aspirations to join NATO.

Cambodia has blamed factors including the heatwave gripping south-east Asia for a deadly ammunition warehouse explosion. Twenty soldiers were killed in the incident in Kampong Speu province, Cambodia on April 27.
Rejecting claims that rebellious soldiers were to blame, officials said the blast was caused by a combination of faulty munitions and extremely hot weather.
Temperatures of up to 43C are forecast for the country.
An office building as well as nearby barracks were destroyed, with 25 nearby homes affected, reports said.

Ukraine on May 1 presented an AI-generated spokesperson who will make official statements on behalf of the foreign ministry. Dressed in a dark suit, the spokesperson introduced herself as Victoria Shi, a "digital person". The foreign ministry said the statements given by Shi would not be generated by AI but "written and verified by real people". The main reason for creating her was "saving time and resources" for diplomats, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said. Kuleba said the new spokesperson was a "technological leap that no diplomatic service in the world has yet made". Shi's creators are a team called The Game Changers who have also made virtual reality content related to the war in Ukraine.

Donald Trump has warned that Joe Biden and his family could face multiple criminal prosecutions once he leaves office unless the US supreme court awards Trump immunity in his own legal battles with the criminal justice system.
In a sweeping interview with Time magazine, Trump painted a startling picture of his second term, from how he would wield the justice department to hinting he may let states monitor pregnant women to enforce abortion laws.
Trump made the threat against the Biden family in an interview with Eric Cortellessa of Time, in which he shared the outlines of what the magazine called “an imperial presidency that would reshape America and its role in the world”.

Australia will spend almost A$1 billion on payments for those fleeing domestic violence in response to what the government is calling a "national crisis" of gendered violence. Thousands took to the streets on Saturday to protest violence against women, which the government says has killed a woman every four days this year. Five women were killed during a mass stabbing in April, the same month a high-profile defamation case concluded a rape took place in parliament.
