In age 7 Jonathan J. Crabtree noticed a deep 398-year-old problem. As if pulling a loose thread, he unravelled the feeble fabric of western math education to rebuild it from India’s ZERO!
So, elementary maths historian Jonathan J. Crabtree has been studying the history of mathematics since 1983. Today, he is known as a guest lecturer at Indian mathematics conferences, schools and universities. Having reviewed writings in Latin, Greek, Arabic, Sanskrit and many other languages, his presentations reveal how India’s ‘lost’ ancient Bharatiya mathematics is superior to the western maths taught today.
Podometic is India’s upgrade from British Arithmetic. You see, India used to lead the world in maths and GDP. Yet under colonial rule India’s wealth was taken by the British. If India is to be the successful innovator it once was, it will only be with innovation in education. And that innovation is introducing the original and ingenious ideas of Āryabhaṭa, Bhāskara and Brahmagupta, once known as Ganita, into classes 1 to 8. In post Vedic times Brahmagupta created a zero based maths. Long lost, it has now been found…
THE STORY OF INDIAN MATHS THE BRITISH EMPIRE TRIED TO KEEP SECRET!
Brahmagupta’s laws of zero, positives and negatives NEVER made it to India today! In 628 CE Brahmagupta gave birth to maths with his laws of negatives, positives and zero. 200 years later, Al-Khwarizmi said 1 was ‘outside of number’. In 1228 Brahmagupta’s zero definition was absent as Fibonacci introduced 0 to Europe. In 1570, Henry Billingsley invented an illogical definition of multiplication (missing India’s zero) and the British Empire passed it off as Euclid’s. This false definition remains today. In 1968 At age 7 I saw India’s zero was missing in England’s wrong multiplication definition. In 1983 I smashed my spine and promised God I would fix British arithmetic if I could walk again. I got my miracle and walked! So, I went to work fixing maths!
SO, WILL THE WORLD BREXIT BAD BRITISH MATHS?
The solutions to India’s problems of drought, congestion, pollution and poverty rely on science and science relies on maths. Yet Indian maths students ranked 2nd last in global test. So, India must return to its heritage of Bharatiya maths, consistent with laws of modern-day physics!
How might the men who created zero and base ten positional notation have taught their own children aged 5 to 13? Imagine meeting the minds of Āryabhaṭa, Bhaskara and Brahmagupta as if they were explaining maths to their own children! Crabtree also brings to life other primary-level maths the world missed, by building upon the ideas of giants such as Euclid, Descartes and Newton.
