A description of anti-stall technology applied to axial compressors in gas turbine engines. If turbine engines are designed to run with maximum efficiency at their design point (100%), then the compressor geometry needs to be very aggressive. Such a design will not run at lower rpms, and will not even start. The variable vanes alter the angle of attack of the compressor, so it can start and get up to its design speed. To design a compressor for easy starting, you need to give up a lot of power if you don't have variable geometry.
