In this video, I will investigate the power consumption of the HP Z820 workstation. In particular, this Z820 is configured with dual Xeon E5-2687W v2 processors with 16x16GB ECC DIMMs for a total of 256GB of RAM. Besides an M.2 boot drive (in a HP Z Turbo Drive unlocked) and a Quadro P400 GPU for video output, the system is bare. I will test the power consumption of this system as it boots up. Then, I will insert each individual HDD and monitor the power consumption changes, until all 8 HDDs are inserted. I'll also examine the power consumption when all 8 HDDs are under disk I/O load using iozone benchmark tool. Finally, I'll examine the power consumption with CPU load generated by sysbench benchmark tool running CPU load on 32-threads. The goal of this video is to help people who are considering the HP Z820 and set expectations for power consumption. Since this is a high end CPU/RAM configuration, the numbers presented in this video should set the max limit, with room for improvement by choosing less power hungry CPUs or using less RAM DIMM modules.
