On January 11, 2024, this sugarcane field in a southwestern province of China was set on fire. The video was circulated online at home and abroad. It was jokingly called a "political incident" by the public. It has aroused heated debates and applause on the Internet. So, what’s going on?
Let’s take a look at the sugarcane field first. A media veteran from mainland China disclosed on X on January 11 that several torches made of oiled straw had been thrown at the sugarcane field to set it ablaze. The authorities urgently deployed fire engines to extinguish the fire, and a large number of police officers and national security guards were also dispatched to stop the public from taking photos.
