“Knocking On Heaven’s Door” Michael Patrick Kelly’s Lockdown-Concert in the Cologne Cathedral / Germany Easter, April 2020. The world came to an eerie halt. Many countries are in lockdown. Shops and schools are closed. Michael Patrick Kelly gets an invite from Cologne Cathedral to play a concert in the 700 years old UNESCO world cultural heritage location. Alone and without an audience. The cathedral’s portals remain shut. The audio-visual recording of this extraordinary moment will now be available to see for everyone. In this 30-minute lockdown concert, the pop/rock musician and peace activist wants to voice the questions, fears, sorrows and longings many people now have and send notions of hope with songs like “Knocking On Heaven’s Door” (Bob Dylan) or “Motherless Child“ (spiritual) as well as his own compositions, including songs from the days when he was a monk. „It was very moving to sing in this empty cathedral that usually sees up to 30.000 visitors per day,“ says Michael Patrick Kelly. „I wanted to send a sign of hope into the current mood of anxiety and social isolation in the world and I’m very grateful to the representatives of the Cologne Cathedral for this opportunity.“ He invited two guests: rapper MoTrip and metal singer Jennifer Haben. Both performed on the roof of the cathedral to symbolize the required social distance in these times, while Michael Patrick Kelly remained alone inside with his e-guitar, a loop-station and a grand piano. The duets are shaped by spectacular screen changes. In-between songs, Michael Patrick Kelly gives us an insight into his thoughts and his personal „chat“ with God. He not only ponders the social disruption caused by the virus but also by other urgent threats such as world hunger, climate change, wars and the many refugees worldwide. Also present and a part of the unique performance is the „PeaceBell“, a 360kg bell created by Michael Patrick Kelly out of weapons and scrap metal left over from wars. The Cologne Cathedral was lit specially for this performance.
