I like working with children and I work at the YMCA. Priyanka Singla, MD So Monique is a very active person. She likes to go to the gym, she likes to do pilates, and on a day to day basis, she takes care of kids, which requires a fair bit of physical activity. With low back pain, she was not able to do her job well and was not able to engage in activities that gave her joy. Priyanka Singla, MD She's had multiple radiofrequency ablation. She's been on a number of muscle relaxants. Monique Gennari I’ve been seeing Dr. Singla here for two years for pain management doing the nerve ablation, and it gets rid of the pain for a couple of months. But then the pain would come searing back. Priyanka Singla, MD She was very dejected. She was crying when she came to the clinic and told us that the last injection or the denervation did not work for her and that was her fifth injection or fifth denervation. So at that point, for low back pain, our options are limited. Luckily, at the same time, this new technology came in. So when this technology was introduced to the University of Virginia, we thought about Monique instantaneously. Priyanka Singla, MD I gave her a call and told her that this is a new technology that has just been introduced and we would like you to come in and get evaluated for this. Monique Gennari Dr. Singla believed in me that I would be able to do everything that's required for the neurostimulator device and that I was a candidate for it. That’s just – it's amazing to me. Priyanka Singla, MD So this device has two components. One is the wires that go outside of the bony structure of the spine, and it has a battery that stays inside the patient. The patient is expected to use the therapy twice a day for 30 minutes. It's a basic workout for the muscles. Monique Gennari I get up, make a cup of coffee, turn on the nerve stimulator device. So what it's doing is massaging the back muscles that are sleeping and it gets them to move again. Priyanka Singla, MD When the patient is referred to us, we look at the patient as a whole and take care of their actual disease process. And using the cutting edge novel technology is one of the avenues that sets us apart from anybody else. Monique Gennari Five years ago, I could barely move and I had a hard time getting to physical therapy. Now I can go to the gym and exercise every morning and have enough energy that I'm able to do child care in the afternoon and run around with kids for fun and be engaged in life again.
