This is the precarious mindset of those alive today who look back at...Nazi Germany...and swear that they could never have participated in such...racism.... That is exactly what makes the scapegoat mechanism possible—the idea that you are not capable of it. We lack the humility to see that we are all caught up in mimetic processes. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, who spent eight years in Soviet forced labor camps...and who saw his country descend into incoherence and evil, reflected later in life: “If only it were all so simple!” he wrote. “If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?”
