Astrophysicists at Northwestern University have proposed a novel breakthrough in detecting ‘ripples’ in the fabric of spacetime, called gravitational waves. So far, these waves have only been detected from binary star systems but scientists have now turned their attention to the cocoons of debris surrounding massive dying stars.
Cocoons form when jets of particles collide with collapsing layers of a dying star, creating a surrounding turbulent and energetic bubble of material. For the first time, these state-of-the-art simulations suggest that these cocoons of debris surrounding dying stars likely emit gravitational waves. This discovery could help us better understand particle jets and shed light on the inner workings of the stars.
