On March 1st 2021, the first ever regulations on repair for appliances came into force in Europe. Four types of electrical appliances will now have to be more easily repairable and longer-lasting following the entry into force of these new EU Ecodesign measures: washing machines, dishwashers, fridges and displays (including TVs). The regulations require manufacturers to make repair documentation as well as a number of spare parts available for a minimum of 7 years once the products are taken out of the market. While these new rules are an important step, they do not mean we have the Right to Repair in Europe. Yet. To better understand what these new regulations mean for repairers on the ground, what should be done to ensure a universal Right to Repair and what the next steps will be in Europe, we hosted a webinar on Wednesday with contributions from: Katrin Meyer, coordinator of Runder Tisch Reparatur, the German roundtable for repair and member of Right to Repair steering group. Steffen Vangerow, a trained technical craftsman who has spent several years repairing in the workshop and also on site with customers. Now, as managing director of German business Vangerow GmbH, he is advocating and looking for profitable repair markets to preserve the craft of repair. Stephen Neal has been repairing home appliances professionally for over 25 years. He worked for 18 years on in-warranty repairs for the Electrolux group, before setting up his own company, London Spin Doctor, repairing washing machines, driers, dishwashers and ovens of all brands.
