The Weddell Sea is one of the last pristine areas in the Antarctic, not least because the international fishing fleet has spared this region so far. The European Union and its Member States, together with Norway, Uruguay and Australia, submitted a proposal to the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) for a marine protected area (MPA) in the Weddell Sea. The scientific background was compiled by experts of the Alfred Wegener Institute with support from the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
