Aaron Sachs, MD:
Every surgical procedure has risks, and what we do is carefully weigh those risks with the benefits. Bariatric surgery actually has less risk than a hip replacement, and so to think of it as dangerous is a little bit misleading.
Alexandra Zubowicz, MD:
One common myth after bariatric surgery is that you can't get pregnant and that couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, fertility a lot of times improves from the mere fact of losing weight and getting to a normal weight. You start to ovulate and start to have a normal cycle and actually become fertile.
Aaron Sachs, MD:
Some weight regain after the initial period of weight loss is normal, but often it is not to levels where people can be concerned. The goal of weight loss surgery isn't so much to lose a number of weight. It's to get the patient healthier and overall make them feel better.
