Today, we will look into managing users and groups in Linux. In a multi-user system like Linux, restricting access to users and being able to properly audit user's activity is very important. Proper management of users and groups is one of the must have skill for a System administrator.
In Linux, there are many ways of managing those users and groups and we will try to address them all in this video. Even though it is not recommended, you can directly edit system files to add/remove users and manage permissions but there are various commands to do so which is more safer option. Linux offers some low level commands such as "useradd" and "userdel" to manage users but they are meant for system use and need to be used with proper switches if you want to take full advantage of those commands. But instead, you can use other high level commands such as "adduser" and "deluser" and manage users very easily. In this video, we will look both ways to manage users and we would also explore "usermod" command to modify user information, "addgroup", "delgroup" and "groupmod" command to manage groups. We will also take a look into "/etc/addusers.conf" file and learn how default permissions are set for newly created users.
