Have you ever avoided applying for a job you really wanted because you didn’t feel qualified? Have you ever avoided asking for a promotion because you didn’t think you were good enough?
You’re not alone. Many people feel this way. There’s even a name for it. It’s called imposter syndrome, and it causes us to doubt our abilities, and doubt our value as an employee.
When you don’t feel qualified for a promotion at work, or that you’re good enough to apply for the job you want, you end up waiting too long to apply for those jobs, and wait too long to ask for promotions.
What you may not know is that most of the other applicants for that job are feeling the same self-doubt that you are feeling. The difference is some of them decide to push through those doubts and apply for the job and figure the rest out later.
Persevere through your doubts. Remind yourself how far you’ve come, and tell yourself that even though you don’t feel fully qualified for the position, you’re going to figure out how to make it work.
Lastly, remind yourself that you’re not the only one feeling those doubts. So why not take the chance and apply, and figure out the rest once you get there?
