PREVIEW ONLY – NOT FOR TRAINING. "Subtle disrespect when a manager is present turns ten times worse when they are gone."
Bullies are cowards. That is why they pick on those who will not or can not fight back and they avoid authority figures who can deliver consequences. If, as a manager, you notice any subtle signs of bullying on your team, like disrespect, mocking, belittling, badgering of a team member, you can be sure than when you are not present it is ten times worse or even a case of full blown harassment.
Do not ignore disrespect toward a team member. No matter how subtle, if it is happening in your presence, the bully is testing you and your leadership is being undermined. If it is their first offensive, try to meet with them privately and address their behavior, if they are a repeat offender, calling them out in front of the team sends the clearest signal that you will not tolerate disrespect on your team. It also takes them down a few notches in the eyes of those who follow them or fear them.
It is your primary responsibility to create a safe place to work for every team member. That starts by establishing a Teammate's Bill of Rights, as you will see in this clip from one of our all time best sellers, The Unified Team.
