Working with deadlines is already stressful, but what do you do when your client moves your deadline up after you’ve started the project?
A good way to prepare yourself ahead of time for changes to your timeline is by discovering your client’s priorities.
At the start of every project, ask your client some direct questions about their expectations and wants. Questions like, “What is most important to you? Can you rank this? Is budget most important? Is timeline most important? Is scope the most important thing?”
Knowing the answers to these questions can help you decide how best to respond to changes in the project’s timeline. If the timeline is the most important thing to this client, that means you might be able to wiggle around scope, or wiggle around the budget. Perhaps you’ll decide to charge them more money to add more team member resources. Dropping certain features can give you room to move up the timeline and finish sooner.
Managing tight deadlines gets even more stressful when the client moves up the deadline. Prepare yourself ahead of time and create some wiggle room by identifying what’s most important to your client.
