In March 2023, Uganda reintroduced the notorious “anti-homosexuality” bill (formerly known as the “kill the gays” bill) first introduced in 2009.
The bill, signed into law in May 2023, mandates severe penalties like life imprisonment, mandatory conversion therapy, and even the death penalty for LGBTQIA+ individuals.
Since its enactment, activists and lawyers have petitioned the constitutional court on human rights grounds, but on April 3, 2024, the court upheld the law, intensifying the persecution.
This trend has spread across Africa, with Namibia, Kenya, Nigeria, and recently Ghana introducing similar bills under the guise of “family protection,” disrupting families and legalizing homophobia continent-wide.
These laws force queer individuals into exile, facing evictions, unemployment, arrests, rape, and other brutalities.
We demand the repeal of these laws and the court’s decision upholding the anti-homosexuality act. Queer liberation in Africa is urgent-we are African, Black, Queer, and here to Live, Love, and Thrive freely.
We reject colonial-era sentiments that imprison us, asserting our right to live authentically without fear.
