Disney's River Country was the very first water park at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. It was located by Bay Lake and near Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground. The park had a cool rustic vibe, like an old-fashioned swimming hole. It opened on June 20, 1976, but unfortunately, it closed indefinitely on November 2, 2001. Then, on January 20, 2005, The Walt Disney Company announced that it would remain closed forever. It's actually the second Disney park to close permanently, with Discovery Island closing earlier in 1999. They had plans to build a new hotel called Reflections – A Disney Lakeside Lodge on the old River Country site, but construction got halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. And just recently, on March 15, 2022, Disney announced that they canceled the hotel to make room for new DVC villas at Disney's Polynesian Village Resort. It's quite the rollercoaster of events, huh? 🎢
