This is a real portable radio adventure, operating QRV from the very center of St.Petersburg – the city of Peter the Great, White Nights, Drawbridges and fantastic aura. St. Petersburg is also known as the "Venice of the North,” due to its many canals from the Neva River which flows from the city and into the Gulf of Finland, which is part of the Baltic Sea.
Operating radio in the city caused me to consider three risks: what would the noise level be, would the installation of my dipole be a problem, and would the police permit me to do this?
I had my license just in case of any problems. But nevertheless, an English-speaking young lady with strange equipment transmitting something during the night from the heart of Russia's second largest city…fortunately, everything went well - nobody noticed me. For the antenna installation, there was an oak tree planted by one of the Russian tsars, and the noise level was surprisingly Zero on both the 40 meter and 20 meter band!
NO QRM, NO NOISE - at the center of the city! How is this possible?!? This made conditions further lucky with the signal propagation! As always, it brought surprises. There were few nearby stations, but I reached the DX Station, Steve PJ4DX, whose QTH is on Bonaire Island in the Caribbean! And with the help of radio operator Johannes DK1NO acting as a relay station, I was able to contact and enter John VY2WW into my log.
A good DX station is possible using very simple equipment such as a dipole antenna and a portable radio. Just try it! And if you are not yet a Radio Amateur – we hope you join us!!!
