Liberty Shrine, Lapu-Lapu City April 27, 2024 President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. honors the Philippine hero Lapulapu as he joins the nation in commemorating the 503rd anniversary of the Victory at Mactan in a ceremony at the Liberty Shrine in Lapu-Lapu City on April 27, 2024. During the celebration known as ‘Lapulapu Day’ or ‘Adlaw ni Lapulapu’, the President leads the flag ceremony and offers a wreath to the statue of Lapulapu. He also witnesses a reenactment of the Battle of Mactan during the program proper and the performance of 'Arnis de Abanico', a subset of Filipino martial arts that focuses on the use of 'abanico' or fan as a weapon. Pursuant to Republic Act (RA) No. 11040, the 27th of April every year is declared as a special non-working holiday in the City of Lapu-Lapu and a special working public holiday throughout the country to commemorate the victory of Lapulapu and his men over the Spaniards in the historic Battle of Mactan on 27 April 1521.
