We tend to think that it's up to the services we use (email, banking, social media, etc.) to make us safe. But there are common mistakes we make that can make us vulnerable! Here are six of the most common personal online security mistakes I see people make...plus how to avoid them. 1. Not balancing your bank account It's something that our parents' generation used to do religiously, but we don't seem to do at all. While we may not have to itemize every single purchase (although that's not a bad thing), what you don't want to do is pay your credit card bill without first checking every single transaction. Did you authorize the purchase? Do you recognize it? If not, you'll want to do some research and, in some cases, even contact your bank to follow up. Believe it or not, banks do make mistakes and I've been able to get many of these charges reversed. 2. Using Lame or Reused Passwords The greatest threat to our personal online security is our lame passwords. We either write them down on a piece of paper or we reuse the same one on multiple accounts. We need to learn to either create better passwords or start using a password manager app. 3. Not using 2-Factor Authentication If you're not using 2-factor authentication as part of your personal online security strategy, you should start now. Two-factor authentication is a means of verifying your identity beyond just a simple password in a way that makes it extremely hard for hackers to impersonate you. 4. Not Checking Your Free Credit Report By law, you are allowed to get a free credit report once a year from each of the three major credit bureaus. In this way, you can key an eye on your credit and identity every 4 months if you'd like. 5. Being Careless about Public WiFi Public WiFi can be dangerous and is an easy way for hackers to prey on unsuspecting users. This is especially true of networks that aren't secured by a password. Don't use it! Or if you do, make sure that you also use a virtual private network, or a VPN. 6. Being to Trusting (not being suspicious enough) In general, we're way too trusting of all the places where we give out our information online. We give our credit card, our personal info and sometimes even our identity numbers! Learn to be skeptical (not paranoid!) so as to protect your identity and maintain good personal online security.
