Whenever you see a credit card earning Amex Membership Rewards points, you KNOW that the rewards will be ideal for flights on that next vacation. However, before you go apply for that Amex Platinum Card, Amex Gold Card, Amex Green Card, or any other Amex card, be sure you understand the terms of the welcome offer (i.e. signup bonus). If you “think” you made enough “purchases,” but if not all of those purchases are eligible, then it could mean missing out on that offer altogether. For my situation, it came down to “Can you pay taxes with a credit card?” Historically, yes, paying taxes with credit cards is fine, be it with Amex credit cards, Chase credit cards, Capital One credit cards, and so forth. BUT…I ran into a MAJOR PROBLEM. When using my Amex Business Gold Card to pay taxes, ONE of my transactions was eligible but the OTHER ONE was NOT! And worst of all, I was planning on the spend from my quarterly tax payment to go towards earning the Amex signup bonus of 90K Membership Rewards points (the spend requirement was to spend $10K in the first 3 months). As a side note, my Amex Business Gold Card offer was targeted via email, and it was also one of those Amex No Lifetime Language offers.
