But 10 days before hand, in Africa another soldier serving the British Army had fired upon German forces. And on the very day of the Irish Dragoon Guard’s cavalry charge in Europe, the very first British officer was killed in action…once again, 4000 miles away in Africa. The Togoland Campaign of 1914 is a long-lost footnote to Britain’s story in the Great War, but it too provided some notable hallmarks and Britain’s first victory over the Germans as well.
