The desolate plains around Bakhmut have borne witness to some of the fiercest fighting of the war in Ukraine. A Ukrainian drone, barely the size of a bird, darted at a hulking Russian craft. The battle raged for hours, a maelstrom of explosions and metal shrapnel.
