In a homage to "A Christmas Carol," Jon Gratch, a USC research professor of computer science and psychology, is visited one night by five emotions. Shame. Anger. Joy. Frustration. Hope. Their request: to be made a gift to all the world's machines.
In 2004, Gratch and Stacy Marsella co-developed EMA, one of the first computational models to allow machines "emotional intelligence." His innovative work in the USC Computational Emotion Group may one day lead to the first truly intelligent AI.
