Where do you want to go first when the pandemic is over? Home to Pakistan is at the top of Malala’s list. “I miss my home town of Swat Valley... the mountains and green hills and rivers,” the 23-year-old tells Apple CEO Tim Cook in a special episode of British Vogue’s In Conversation series. The Nobel Peace Prize winner – and July’s cover star – says she spent the enforced downtime binge-watching her favourite shows, making video calls to friends and hanging out with her little brothers (“there was no option, I had to spend time with them,” she deadpans). But this being Malala, she accomplished a little more than that in lockdown. She’s announced a multi-year production deal with Apple TV+, and a new production company, Extracurricular. She’s learning to code (with a little help from Cook’s team). And of course, she’s as focused as ever on female education. Malala shares her fears for those girls around the world left homebound by the pandemic, who are at risk of never returning to school. Her priority and that of Malala Fund, she tells Cook, is “to ensure that we are creating a world where all girls – including the 130 million girls who are out of school right now – can get access to safe and quality education.” Watch the video to hear their wide-ranging conversation in full.
