Stratigraphy is a critical concept in our discussion of the various layers accumulated in Rome, deposited through human and natural actions. The term palimpsest, which we use to describe the stratified architectural archaeology visible throughout Rome (e.g., "Tabularium"), comes from the reused manuscripts on which erased ink of earlier texts is still discernible under later writing.
