In 1887, the city was established when the Texas and Pacific Railway Company completed a train route through the region. The town was that name in honor of Amarillo Creek, which the Spanish first called in the 18th century. In terms of agricultural and livestock output, Amarillo is second to none.
A significant oil and gas sector center, the city also has a thriving economy. Bell Helicopter, Tyson Foods, and Xcel Energy are just a few of the significant companies that call Amarillo home. Amarillo also has a two-year community college called Amarillo College.
