Whether we like it or not, unconscious bias exists in the workplace. There are biases about gender, culture, and other stereotypes that might impact an employer’s hiring decisions.
Knowing that these biases exist, how can you be sure you’re given fair consideration when applying for a job?
Your resume is the most important tool you have in overcoming unconscious bias in the hiring process, but most applicants fail to make their resume stands out among the other applicants’ resumes.
The best way to stand out is to not sell yourself short. That might mean working with a resume coach to ensure you’re representing yourself well. If you can’t afford a resume coach, ask those in your network: people you admire, people that are in leadership, people that are hiring managers.
Make sure that you’re representing yourself as much as you can so that you can stay competitive. But most importantly, be bold, be aggressive, and apply for the job, and let your resume overcome any unconscious biases that may be present.
