I have had to go to the emergency room three or four times in my life. When you go, you depend on them. Very often can be life or death. I have also taken loved ones to the emergency room believing that I will get first-rate care. And oftentimes I do. This video presents a behind the scenes interview with young doctors talking about what they experience. I am not going to share the hospital or the names of the people who I filmed in this informal late-at-night interview in an ER. I was making a one hour PBS documentary on the stresses emergency room doctors and nurses confront and how they deal with them. This documentary was made more than 20 years ago. It was probably the last time doctors and nurses could openly share how they felt because current laws demand privacy even when those who work in hospitals are willing to talk about what day experience. My team and I ran across these two residents – doctors in training. They had graduated from medical school, been awarded MD degrees and were now training in a top city emergency department. They were called interns but they did just about everything an ER doctor does in the emergency department. They were overtired, overstressed, and willing to share what they really experienced behind the scenes. These days, with a very strict Hippa rules, I doubt that my team and I could have done an interview as blunt and as honest as this one. During that film and several others that I have made in inner-city ER departments, I know just how out of this job is. Having experienced the ER when taking members of my family, you see one side of the story. Behind the scenes, it becomes repetitive and doctors and nurses and support people can lose their faith and why they are doing what they are doing and how helpful it is to those coming to the emergency department. Hospitals are overstressed and overwhelmed across the country. And now with the pandemic and other viruses and more and more people with stress, drug overdoses, gun injuries, etc., is nearly impossible to have a staff capable of handling all that and still getting the rest and relaxation they need to not lose their sense of mission. I deeply admire all those who take on this task (including my daughter who is a nurse practitioner at a major inner-city hospital) and am thankful for the care they provide and their ability to keep on going, whatever the level of personal stress and angst they feel.
