For a variety of reasons my wife and I were in New York City on Halloween night. Although I was raised in Queens, New York, I've never been in Manhattan for Halloween which I assumed would be even crazier than San Francisco on Halloween eve which I did witness one year. We were staying in lower Manhattan in Soho at a wonderful hotel called the Dominick which was right in the center of the action. We walked downstairs (without any costumes) and out into the crowd. There were wild looking people dressed in wild outfits, some seminude, some on gigantic stilts, and it was like being on some kind of a drug. I had my cell phone with me and these high school boys were loudly playing their drums, seemingly unaware of what was going on around them. They were a group from Brooklyn I believe and they just were doing their own thing. I turned the camera on and recorded this minute of what they were up to. I love drums and could have just stayed alongside them and listened, but there was so much to see (which I unfortunately did not record). But I do love these dreamers and could have stayed listening for an amazingly long period of time. They just kept on playing together and didn’t enter the parade up 6th Avenue during the time when I was there. I recommend, if you are thinking of coming to New York City for Halloween, sign up and get a special ticket where you can stand in an area and see what is going on without actually participating in it (unless you want to of course).
