This video is an experiment. Could I make a family home movie of our France vacation using a GoPro as a cell phone-like camera with a small mic attached. Could I achieve meaningful family home video storytelling by telling my family that the camera was recording for the future and that we were reporters.
Here's how GoPros have been utilized in documentary filmmaking.
Extreme Environments: GoPros excel in harsh or extreme conditions, such as underwater, in extreme weather, or in rugged terrain. Their durability and compactness make them ideal for documentaries exploring nature, wildlife, adventure sports, or extreme weather.
Action and Sports: Documentaries that focus on sports, particularly extreme sports, frequently use GoPros to capture dynamic action shots that larger cameras cannot easily achieve.
Space Constraints: In situations where space is limited, such as in small rooms, tight spaces, or in vehicles, GoPros can be easily mounted and maneuvered to capture the necessary footage.
Aerial Shots: Mounted on drones, GoPros can capture stunning aerial footage for documentaries, offering a unique perspective on landscapes, cityscapes, and action scenes.
Undercover or Hidden Camera Work: Their small size makes GoPros suitable for undercover documentary work, where discreet filming is necessary.
Wildlife Documentaries: GoPros are often used in wildlife documentaries to capture close-up shots of animals without disturbing them, thanks to their small, unobtrusive design.
Interactive and Immersive Experiences: Some documentary filmmakers use GoPros to create immersive and interactive experiences, especially in the realm of virtual reality (VR) documentaries.
My intimate style not only made this video worthy of keeping as a family treasure, but the experience of making it gave us the best vacation we ever had.
And best of all, anyone using the techniques that I used here could do something similar for their family's legacy.
