In 2018, a long duration balloon mission from NASA, observed rare electric blue clouds in the upper atmosphere.
These clouds are known as noctilucent clouds or polar mesospheric clouds, or PMC’s for short.
The incredibly rare electric blue clouds are composed of ice crystals that glow a bright blue or white when reflecting sunlight, and are extremely sensitive to environmental factors like water vapor and temperature.
To better understand these clouds, scientists sent a giant balloon to observe gravity waves in them.
The crewless balloon travelled to 50 miles high, and floated from Sweden to Canada over 5 days, in July 2018.
The mission, called the PMC Turbo mission, had seven imaging systems on board, these cameras captured a staggering 6 million images - filling up 120 terabytes of storage.
The resulting photos, which scientists have begun to analyze, will help us better understand turbulence in the atmosphere, as well as in oceans, lakes, and other planetary atmospheres, and may even help to improve weather forecasting.
Thanks for watching.
