PAUSE frames are a useful feature in the Ethernet Standard. If too much traffic is being sent, a receive can be overwhelmed. At layer-2, the receiver can send a PAUSE frame, asking the sender to wait a short time while the receiver catches up. PAUSE frames are a special type of frame, called a MAC Control Frame. These frames are sent either to a specific destination, or to a multicast address. This includes the duration of the pause, measured in ‘quanta’. To enable PAUSE frames, simply enable ‘flow control’ on your device. This can be set to RX (receive PAUSE frames), TX (send frames) or both. A revised standard (802.1Qbb) enables priority based flow control. This allows PAUSE frames to be sent for a specific class of service queue, rather than for all traffic.
