How To Remove And Re-Fit Bike Pedals
Removing and fitting your pedals is something that you may need to do from time to time. You may have to put pedals on a new bike or replace ones on an old bike or you may need to remove and re fit the original pedals on a bike for a flight. What ever the reason, its a very easy and fairly straightforward job.
All you will need is a spanner or wrench, either one like this or an adjustable one. However I would suggest that you use a proper pedal spanner as using regular ones can be a little fiddly. You can buy these from most bike shops or on-line and once you have one you'll be surprised how often you'll be using it.
To remove your pedals line up the spanner with the two flat sections on the pedal spindle. If you are removing the right pedal turn anti-clockwise. It should start to unscrew without the need to apply too much force but it may help to brace the other pedal. Otherwise, you’ll probably end up just turning the chain set as you try and turn the spanner.
Once it starts unscrewing, keep turning until the pedal is clear of the crank.
Then do the same with the left pedal. Note that it doesn’t follow the 'lefty loosy, righty tighty' thing. It actually unscrews clockwise.
To fit pedals, give the thread a little bit of grease and place it in the crank. Give it a few turns by hand to get it started and then do the rest with the spanner. To tighten the right pedal turn clockwise and the left pedal anti-clockwise.
