I explore strategies for engaging in honest, effective communication about science or anything else. Too much of our private and public discourse is bogged down by opposing parties simply not honestly engaging with each other’s positions. We often behave like lawyers, attempting to confirm a pre-defined conclusion by whatever means necessary, rather than like scientists, who attempt to disconfirm one’s position.
In particular, I discuss:
1. The principle of charity
2. Steel manning
3. Falsifying one’s position
4. Respecting expertise
5. Aligning one’s position to the “weight of evidence”
