Vulnerability scan tools like nmap can help you do TCP scanning, and other tools expose different avenues into a system. It's important to consider how you're going about scanning your network when you're doing vulnerability scanning, as different approaches leave different tracks and provide different results. A discovery scan might not necessarily be stealthy, but adding a tool like nmap can hide some of its footprints. Assuming you already know what's on the network, or you're not worried about being noisy, a full scan can show ports, vulnerabilities in software packages, and more. There are tools — some of them commercial — that can help you find network vulnerabilities: Nmap, Nessus, and OpenVAS are just a few of them.
