NOPE! You don't have to sacrifice one for the other. Unless you have a speaker with poor directivity: a speaker with a good on-axis response, but a bad off-axis response, or vice versa, there's no need to compromise. A speaker with good on-axis response and smooth and similar off-axis response, with a accurate frequency response, placed properly in a good room, can provide you with good sound stage and good tonal balance. They are not mutually exclusive.
