What do you do if your client is not happy with their project manager? How do you handle the situation if your client is asking for a new PM?
The first step is to simply ask them why they are not happy. You’ve got to dig in and see what the root cause of their dissatisfaction is.
Sometimes it’s a personality clash between the client and the project manager. Sometimes it’s a situation where the client thinks there’s something wrong, but it really isn’t wrong. It could also be that the PM simply dropped the ball. Maybe they’re overloaded, or they didn’t know how to do something, and were afraid to ask.
If it’s a personality clash, you might opt to make a switch. You don’t want to force anyone to work with someone they don’t get along with. But, if it’s a matter of tasks not getting done properly, you might not want to make a switch. It may be better to improve the quality of work you’re providing, and win back the client’s trust.
Sometimes you’ll have a client that wants to have a new project manager. If that happens, seek first to understand why they’re unhappy. If it’s a personality clash, you might want to make a change. But, if it’s a work-related issue, see if you can win back the client’s trust.
