Gnome desktop environment begun in 1999 and remained popular up until they changed direction with Gnome Shell (Gnome 3). Now days Gnome seem to be intent on removing features in their applications, and driving people to create forks using the GTK toolkit.
It’s possible to add extensions back into Gnome desktop from https://extensions.gnome.org/ in order to recreate some of the removed features, such as the suspend button.
Gnome is available for most Linux distros, and comes as the default desktop in Debian and Fedora.
