I picked up this Optiplex 390 recently off of eBay for $135, and I've been slowly converting it into a Linux gaming computer! Also, I notice in this video I say "1 gigabyte" instead of "1 terabyte", oops!
(You'll probably get better results if you use Windows in most benchmarks, but I only use Unix-based systems nowadays).
Here's a list of how much I spent on each component (note that of course a lot of this list relied on luck, but if you search your local Kijiji/Craigslist/Facebook Marketplace actively, you can find similar deals!). I'll be throwing more powerful parts into it sooner or later, but for now this is enough to get up and running and play most games at acceptable framerates!
Optiplex 390 (i5-2400, 4GB RAM) - $135 (was originally $120, unit came with a dead motherboard, seller refunded $25 and I bought a new motherboard for $37.98). You can find these a lot cheaper from your local computer recycling/refurbishment centres, I just ordered this one online because I don't have the strength or means to carry a computer from one end of the city to another.
OCZ Fatal1ty 550W PSU - $30 (as it was missing cables).
Radeon HD 6850 - Free (it was labelled as unknown condition, so I took the gamble anyway and it works just fine!)
16GB Yongxinsheng DDR3 RAM - $66.40
The hard drives and SSDs I had lying around from other computers, so I didn't include their prices here, but 128/240GB SSDs and 1TB 3.5" HDDs can be found for pretty cheap nowadays.
